About The Untappd Community Awards

Untappd is proud to release the first-ever Untappd Community Awards, which celebrate the thousands of great breweries and beers rated as best-in-class by our 11 million users in 2023! Countless breweries globally brew amazing beer, and we recognize (and have even heard from a few brewers through the years!) that we could do a better job of highlighting the best non-IPAs and barrel-aged stouts that don’t garner the eye-popping 4.0+ average ratings. While there are plenty of awards to go around for various IPA and Stout substyles, the Untappd Community Awards will recognize annually the very best beers in all qualifying substyles (more on qualification requirements below)!

For our first year, we’re doling out awards to the top three beers in all qualifying substyles across all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. as well as the 50 countries with the most check-ins from 2023. Over 1.5 million beers were rated in 2023, meaning fewer than 1.65% of beers (25,302 in total) won awards. Impressively, nearly 30% of brewers (7,427 total) produced an award winning beer!

We encourage you to take some time reviewing the top beers in your area and those that received awards for your favorite substyle. After you’re finished reviewing the 2023 Untappd Community Awards recipients, go visit the many great breweries that worked so hard to produce these amazing beverages and try them! And don’t forget to check them in!

Importantly, Untappd team members had no subjective input on these awards. No brewers received preferential treatment. The only criteria were the objective metrics outlined below based on the ratings of Untappd community members all around the world.
Beers were ranked by style according to their average rating from check-ins with ratings in the calendar year 2023. The date a beer was brewed or released was not a factor.
One user, one vote per beer! We counted the last check-in from each user who checked in the beer in 2023. If a user rated a given beer multiple times in 2023, only the final check-in with a rating counted.
For a beer to qualify, it must have received at least 50 check-ins from 50 unique Untappd community members in 2023.
For a substyle to qualify for the Community Awards, there must have been at least 3 qualifying beers in the substyle in the selected geography in 2023.
Beers qualify based on the brewery’s primary location, not the location of the check-ins, user, etc.
We did not remove vintages, batches, beers poured with/without nitrogen, etc. In rare instances, a beer of the same name but of different vintages won two or three places in a substyle.
